Tourism in Agra

Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh and along the bank of River Yamuna in the Northern part of India, Agra is a historic city and a very popular tourist destination. Speaking about Agra tourism the first thing that come to our mind is the picture of Taj Mahal. Indeed Taj Mahal is the most important part of tourism in Agra. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz, the Taj Mahal is one of the greatest architectural creations in the surface of then earth and is one of the seven wonders of the world.

For its breathtaking beauty, Taj Mahal attracts millions of international tourists from all corners of the globe that result in huge revenue earning by Agra tourism sector. Taj Mahal is undoubtedly the greatest landmark of India and off course of Agra. It may be mentioned that, the Mughals have the greatest contribution in Agra tourism. Rich history of Mughal empire is deeply attached to the tourism in Agra.



Built in between 1565 and 1571 AD, the Agra Fort is one of the major tourist attractions in Agra. Started by Mughal emperor Akbar the Agra Fort houses several magnificent towers, ramparts, bastions and wonderful gateways. It is said, that, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who completed the construction, was imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb. Located in Sikandra, 10 kilometers away from Agra, Akbar's Mausoleum is an other important part of tourism in Agra. Akbar himself started its construction but it was completed by Jahangir, his son in 1605. built with red sandstones and marbles, the mausoleum is a wonderful specimen of combination of Hindu and Muslim design elements. Apart from these, sites like Chini Ka Rauza, Fatehpur Sikri, Itmad-ud-Daulah's tomb and the Temples of Vrindavan are also important parts of tourism in Agra.
