Fatehpur Sikri, Agra |
|
|
Located a few kilometers away from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri the Red Sandstone citadel which was once the capital of the Mughal empire was built by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Built during the years 1571 -1585, this is one of the spectacular Monuments in Agra and a perfect retreat for any medieval history lover. A brilliant concoction of Hindu and Muslim architecture, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra is at the apex of
Mughal architectural splendor. Though the city was later abandoned because of the shortage of water, whatever remains of the city is fair enough to drive any traveler ecstatic.
Some of the chief attractions at Fatehpur Sikri, Agra include the Diwan-I-Am which is a rectangular courtyard mainly for the general public.
|
Also known as the Hall Of Public Audience, it was used as the
venue for celebrations and public prayers. The beautiful jali work on either sides of the courtyard for the ladies attending the court is particularly noteworthy. To the right hand side of this is the Diwan-I-khaas a two storied building meant for the Private or royal Audience. The building is known for its opulent carvings and ornate columns. Other important things to watch out for are the Turkish Sultana’s House reminiscent of Central Asian carvings in wood, The Treasury Building, Daulat khana-I-khas.
But what stands out is the Panch Mahal-the five storied open structure which was actually built for the royal ladies who played hide and seek in it.
A stark contrast to the public halls, this structure is typically Rajput in its style.
A trip to Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, remains incomplete without a visit to the Palace of Jodha Bai, Hawa Mahal , Nagina Masjid, Sunehra Makan, Birbal’s Palace, Buland Darwaza or the Gateway of Victory just to name a few.
