Chini Ka Rauza

Looking back on a rich historical past, Agra the city which boasts of all the bygone Mughal charms is one of the most captivating tourist destinations in India. Any typical Agra Holiday actually remains incomplete without a visit to the scintillating Monuments in Agra of which the Chini Ka Rauza deserves mention. A cenotaph dedicated to the erudite scholar and poet, Allama Afzal Khan Mullah of Shiraz, who was also the Prime Minister of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan the Chini Ka Rauza was built in the year 1635. Located on the banks of the Yamuna river, it lies in the vicinity of Itimad ud Daulah's Tomb another famed monument in Agra dedicated to the memory of Nur Jahan's father.

Christened after the multicolored tiles that adorn the walls of the regal mausoleum, the tomb derives its name Chini Ka Rauza. With the host of blue, green and yellow tiles embossed with attractive geometric and floral designs, the dazzling glazed tiles are an absolute riot of colors in this structure. The architectural style is worth watching. Apart from the strong Mughal influence which is quite obvious, the Chini Ka Rauza also displays a grand Persian influence. The walls of the tomb do not have much carvings unlike the other Mughal structures, but the design and fascinating artwork created with tiles is simply applauding and truly one of its kind. The entire tomb is surrounded by high walls, making it impenetrable for the invaders. However the gateways exists in the North and South direction and are a little bit camouflaged.

It is believed that there were also two big multistoried towers beside the Chini Ka Rauza which are no more there and has waned away with time.
