Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th and 17th century. The city today boasts of some of the finest examples of Mughal architecture. Jama Masjid, Agra is one of them.
Jama Masjid, Agra is one of the biggest mosques in India. Jama Masjid was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1571 AD. The mosque is a scared edifice and is located on the highest point of Fatehpur Sikri. The courtyard of the mosque is vast. The Tomb of the Royal Ladies, the Zenana Rauza and the Jammat Khana Hall are located to the right side of the mosque.

The decoration of Jama Masjid is beautiful with glazed tiles, carvings, inlaid stones and paintings. There is a pillared Dalan in the building, ‘chhatri’ and ‘chhajja’ also adorn the building. The chief Iwan has a central arch sketched with geometric designs.
There are two entrances to the mosque, the Badshahi Darwaza and the Buland Darwaza. The tomb of Sheikh Salim Chisti is a beautiful edifice. Emperor Akbar deprived of an heir beseeched Sheikh Salim Chsiti and due to divine favor heir was born to him. Akbar to honor the great saint decided that he would dedicate a city to him. The lattice screens of the tomb are superb.
There is a Sufi shrine in the mosque. The Jama masjid is one of the first buildings around, which the city of Agra grew gradually. The alignment of the mosque was cardinal and the palace courts were built parallel to it. The royal harem was located high and the public places were situated at the lowest level.
Jama Masjid is one of the popular tourist attractions of Agra. The Taj Mahal, though the one and only magnificent wonder without parallel, there are some other tourist attraction in Agra like the Moti Masjid, Mehtab Bagh, Ram Bagh, Itmad-ud-Daulah and other attractions.
