Agra is a city carrying the rich legacy of the Mughal Empire in every aspect, from architecture, culture to food habit. Agra, famous as the site for the world renowned Taj Mahal consists of many other architectural wonders and Itimad-ud-Daulah, Agra is one of them.
Itimad-ud-Daulah, Agra is a fine example of sophisticated Mughal architecture. Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is significantly different from the conventional Mughal tombs. The Mughal architecture took a sophisticated detour from here. The Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra is believed to be the precursor of Taj Mahal.

The tomb is carved elaborately embodying the magnificent essence of Islamic architecture. The edifice is pure white with exquisite floral patterns, intricate inlay work and marble screen work, octagonal towers and grand arched entrances. All these features make the whole edifice elegant. Instead of a dome, there is a closed kiosk on the top of the building. On top of the four towers there are small domed canopies. Tall minarets adorn the four corners of this splendid tomb.
Itimad-ud-Daulah was a Persian merchant, named Ghiyas Beg, who later rose to renown as the Chief Minster of the court of Mughal emperor Jahangir . He then received the title of Itimad-ud-Daulah.
You will recognize him better as father of Nur Jahan, wife of Emperor Jahangir. Itimad-ud-Daulah died in the year 1622. Nur Jahan undertook the construction project of his mausoleum. The Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra resembles a jewel box in a garden. This structure displays the prowess of Islamic architecture with aplomb. With startling variety of geometric arabesque the tomb is exquisite.
Apart from Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra there are a lot to see in the city. The TAj Mahal, the grand marble edifice, which was significantly influenced by the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a marvel. Other tourist attractions in Agra are the Shish Mahal, the Agra Fort, Mariyam’s Tomb, Ram Bagh, Mehtab Bagh, Shah Jahan Park and other wonders.
