History of Agra dates back to those days, when the biggest Indian epic, 'Mahabharata' was written. At that time the city was called Agrabana, which means paradise'. Ptolemy, renowned geographer of second century AD marked the city as Agra on the map. Badalgarh, the fort built by Raja Badal Singh in 1475 AD is an important part of the history of Agra. A poem written by Persian poet Salman in 12th century AD describes a tremendous attack by Sultan Mahmud Ghazni on the Agra fort, ruled by Sultan Sikandar Lodhi is also very important part of the history of Agra.
Apart from these, history of Agra also speaks about the days of the Mughal emperors who did not only controlled the country with strong hands but also contributed largely to its art, culture and economic development. The period from 1526 to 1658 is the most important in the history of Agra as at it was the capital of the Mughal emperors during that time. Besides, history of Agra also speaks about several battles that the Mughals fought with other empires and off course the creation of Taj Mahal, one of the greatest specimens of architectural creations on the surface of the earth, which was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz.
The architecture of Taj Mahal, the designs, the writings on the walls and numerous historic sites that are scattered all over the city are places that would take you back to the days of the different emperors and the amazing silence inside these monuments might make you feel that the people who once stayed there are still whispering near your ears.
